More About Canadian Online Casinos
Canadian citizens have been able to gamble real money legally since online casino gaming first came into existence. The Canadian government reserved the right to license online casino operators – with the Kahnawake Gaming Commission serving as the most prominent example – and to block the sites of casinos based outside of the country. However, Canadians were free to play on any site they could access with no fear of prosecution.
Beginning in 2010, Canadian provincial gaming commissions began to create their own online gaming sites that they would oversee themselves. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation was the first one to act, creating PlayNow.com, a site that was essentially the first official Canadian online casino. PlayNow.com's offering include online slots and table games, a poker room, bingo, sports betting and online versions of the province's lottery products. Money generated by the site remains in British Columbia to support a number of different projects.
Loto Quebec followed suit, rolling out a similar line of gaming options at LotoQuebec.com. That site places a larger emphasis on the lottery and casual games, though slots and table games are still available. The poker rooms for the B.C. And Quebec sites are networked together, allowing players in both provinces to compete against each other in live games and tournaments. The Loto Quebec site, which is in French, also promoted the land-based casinos in the province.
The future for online real money gaming in Canada looks set to follow a similar path. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is working on its own online casino project, which would bring state-sponsored gambling to the country's most populous province. It's not expected that these developments will change the country's attitude toward online gaming in general, and Canadians should still be able to play anywhere that will accept them as customers.
